Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, talked about artificial intelligence’s transformative potential to accelerate science during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Highlighting recent advancements in AI, especially with tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, Satya Nadella expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “What AI will do to science is probably the most interesting thing for me.”
Satya Nadella also dismissed concerns about AI’s uncontrollable nature. “There is nothing that cannot be controlled or governed by humankind for better use, and this is one of the easiest and simplest technologies. What is needed is that it is governed properly, and I’m sure it will happen,” he said.
During his address at the WEF Annual Meeting 2024 in Davos, he cautioned against technology creating a divide and emphasized the importance of vigilance. “The last thing the world needs is technology creating a divide, and we need to be watchful of it,” he warned.
During the conversation with WEF Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab, Nadella spoke about the untapped power of AI in addressing crucial issues like energy transition, cancer detection, and understanding molecule behavior. He acknowledged that while AI has already brought new tools to science, the real power is yet to see how it can accelerate science.
On the technology front, Nadella is always anchoring back to three key aspects: quantum computing, AI, and mixed reality or embodied AI, including humanoid robots. He expressed his desire: “Can we give birth to a new quantum revolution that I want to see?”
He further explained that the world is experiencing limited economic growth if adjusted for inflation. Still, AI has the potential to stimulate economic expansion, similar to what happened when PCs came into use.
