Qualcomm Invests ₹177 Crore in Chennai Design Center to Focus on WiFi Technologies

Qualcomm Inc., which designs wireless technology, marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its Chennai design center on Thursday. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT, and Cristiano Amon, President & CEO of Qualcomm Inc., inaugurated the event with a substantial investment of ₹177.27 crore.

The Chennai design center will focus on advancing wireless connectivity solutions. Specializing in innovations that complement WiFi technologies, the center will serve as a pivotal hub for Qualcomm’s global Research and Development initiatives in 5G Cellular technology.

Growth Opportunities Post Launch of Chennai Design Center

The launch of the Chennai Design Center is anticipated to generate employment for up to 1,600 skilled technology professionals, contributing significantly to the growth and development of India’s vibrant workforce.

With an anticipated employment boost for up to 1,600 skilled technology professionals, the new Chennai design center is poised to significantly contribute to India’s expanding workforce. This move will also unlock growth opportunities in semiconductor design, which aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and fosters a strong indigenous design ecosystem.

Cristiano Amon expressed that the Chennai center will be crucial in developing Qualcomm’s wireless products, such as WiFi technologies. This has also created a conducive environment for technological innovation.

6G University Research India Program

Qualcomm also unveiled the inaugural edition of the Qualcomm 6G University Research India Program. This initiative, aligned with the Indian Government’s Bharat 6G Vision, aims to bolster academic research leadership in emerging 6G technologies. Expanding on the company’s current university research initiative, this program backs and supports professor from top institutions like IITs and IISc, empowering their research in 6G technologies. The inaugural cohort, which includes 17 scholars, will collectively receive about $1.02 million in funding over three years.

Academic Research

The program encompasses two phases, facilitating collaborative engagements between academia and industry experts.

Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the pivotal role of collaborative R&D efforts by the private sector and academicians in shaping the future of wireless technology. He further suggested Qualcomm’s vision in launching the 6G University Research Program: “It will inspire and support the engineering talent in our country in addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
