Google, Meta and Qualcomm Push for Open Digital Ecosystem

Google’s Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Qualcomm, and seven other tech firms joined forces to advocate for an open digital ecosystem considering recent EU tech regulations. The collaborative effort of the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE) aims to promote more open platforms and systems, fostering growth and innovation in Europe. The group expressed its commitment to collaborating with academics, policymakers, and companies to explore digital openness and how this can be achieved in Europe, mainly through implementing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and future developments in the EU regulatory framework.

The DMA mandates that tech giants acting as gatekeepers who manage access to their platforms must enable third parties to interoperate with the gatekeeper’s services. These gatekeepers must also permit their business users to promote their offerings and conclude contracts with customers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.

“We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element,” stated Stan Larroque, the founder of Lynx.

The Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems includes other members such as the Chinese smart devices manufacturer Honor, China’s Lenovo, French augmented reality startup Lynx, U.S. telecommunications equipment maker Motorola, UK electronics manufacturer Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera, and German messaging services provider Wire.

The Coalition aims to foster open digital ecosystems through collaborative efforts across industries, focusing on promoting seamless connectivity and interoperable systems, among other objectives.
