Sundar Pichai: AI’s potential goes beyond competition, focus should be on responsible development

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has emphasized the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) and advocated for its responsible regulation. While Google has been at the forefront of AI development for over a decade, Pichai stated that being the first to create AI products is not their primary goal. Instead, he believes that the true significance lies in developing AI responsibly for the benefit of society.

In an article penned for The Financial Times, Pichai described AI as the most profound technology being pursued by humanity. He emphasized the need for collaboration and highlighted that the competitive aspect of AI development should not overshadow its broader impact. Google’s focus is on building AI responsibly and ensuring that society navigates this technological advancement correctly.

“While some have tried to reduce this moment to just a competitive AI race, we see it as so much more than that,” Pichai said in an article he wrote for The Financial Times.

“At Google, we’ve been bringing AI into our products and services for over a decade and making them available to our users. We care deeply about this. Yet, what matters, even more, is the race to build AI responsibly and make sure that as a society we get it right,” Pichai added.

Pichai stressed that responsible AI development requires collective efforts, including involvement from governments. He called for continued investment in research and development to ensure the safe application of AI, especially in areas where regulations are still evolving. Pichai also expressed the importance of establishing policy frameworks that anticipate potential risks and enable the benefits of AI, suggesting that existing regulations could provide a useful foundation.

“Developing policy frameworks that anticipate potential harms and unlock benefits will require deep discussions between governments, industry experts, publishers, academia, and civil society. Legislators may not need to start from scratch: existing regulations provide useful frameworks to manage the potential risks of new technologies,” he wrote.

International cooperation was another key point raised by Pichai. He underscored the significance of strategic alliances, such as the one between the US and Europe, in shaping AI regulations effectively.

Recently, Pichai met with top European Union officials, including Thierry Breton, to discuss AI. During the meeting, Pichai committed to an “AI Pact” and expressed Google’s willingness to collaborate with other companies for self-regulation. Breton praised this commitment, emphasizing the need for technology companies to comply with European rules regarding data protection, online safety, and AI.

Pichai concluded by stating that Google looks forward to working with others to build AI safely and responsibly, ensuring that the benefits of this technology are accessible to all.
