IIT Madras Graduate Pavan Davuluri Appointed Microsoft Windows Head

Microsoft announced the appointment of Pavan Davuluri, an IIT Madras alumnus, as the new head of the Windows and Surface division. Davuluri assumed the position following the departure of Panos Panay, the former head of the department, who joined Amazon last year.

Microsoft divided the Windows and Surface groups, each with its own leadership. Initially, Pawan Davuluri supervised Surface silicone work, while Mikhail Parakhin headed the Windows department. However, due to Parakhin’s desire to pursue “new roles,” Davuluri will now head both Windows and Surface.

Pavan Davuluri’s Background

Pavan Davuluri has been associated with Microsoft for over 23 years now. After completing his MS at the University of Maryland, he joined Microsoft as the Reliability Component Manager. He graduated from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. With his new appointment at Microsoft, he joins the contributions of Indians in leadership roles in US tech companies alongside leaders like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella.

Leadership Restructure

The integration of Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices into the Experiences + Devices (E+D) division, led by Pavan Davuluri, aims to develop systems, experiences, and devices for the AI era. Shilpa Ranganathan and Jeff Johnson will now report directly to Davuluri.

According to The Verge, Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s head of experience and devices, outlined the organizational changes. He wrote, “As part of this change, we are bringing together the Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices teams as a core part of the Experiences + Devices (E+D) division. This will enable us to take a holistic approach to building silicon, systems, experiences, and devices that span Windows client and cloud for this AI era. Pavan Davuluri will lead this team and continue to report to me. Shilpa Ranganathan and Jeff Johnson and their teams will report directly to Pavan. The Windows team will continue to work closely with the Microsoft AI team on AI, silicon, and experiences.”

Developments at Microsoft

Rajesh Jha briefed the team on changes in the Windows and Web Experiences (WWE) team after the establishment of Microsoft AI. Mikhail Parakhin will explore new roles under Kevin Scott’s supervision and move away from WWE.

The Windows team will collaborate on AI, silicon, and experiences with Microsoft AI. The Web Experiences team will report to Mustafa within the Microsoft AI organization. Rajesh is enthusiastic about integrating AI products like Copilot into E+D offerings, which aligns with Microsoft AI’s goals.
