Russia opens case against Google & other tech companies for personal data legislation violation

Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor has opened administrative cases against Google and six other foreign technology companies for personal data legislation violation. Roskomnadzor said Google has repeatedly failed to comply with Russian legislation after fining tech giants in 2021.

Last year, Russia fined Google RUB 3 million for not storing the personal data of Russian users in databases on Russian territory. However, Google faces a fine of RUB 6-18 million this time around.

Airbnb, Pinterest, Likeme, Twitch, Apple, and United Parcel Service are the other six companies that have allegedly violated the rules for the first time. Roskomnadzor says the first-time offenses carry a potential fine of RUB 1-6 million.

Earlier this month, Google’s Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy after authorities seized its bank account.

The search engine giants were under pressure for months after they failed to delete content Moscow deemed unlawful.

“The Russian authorities’ seizure of Google Russia’s bank account has made it untenable for our Russia office to function, including employing and paying Russia-based employees, paying suppliers and vendors, and meeting other financial obligations,” a Google spokesperson had said.
