Nvidia’s Project GR00T: Bridging the Gap Between AI and Real-World Applications in Robotics

Nvidia revealed Project GR00T, a foundational humanoid robot model. The company also introduced a new computer called Jetson Thor to empower humanoid robots and enhanced its Isaac robotics platform.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, expressed his enthusiasm for tackling the challenges posed by AI in robotics, stating, “Building foundation models for general humanoid robots is one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today. The enabling technologies are coming together for leading roboticists worldwide to take giant leaps towards artificial general robotics.”

Project GR00T Robots

Project GR00T, short for “Generalist Robot 00 Technology,” empowers robots to comprehend natural language and emulate human motions through observational learning. Nvidia claims Project GR00T can quickly acquire coordination, dexterity, and other skills important for navigating, adapting, and engaging with the real world.

In conjunction with Project GR00T, Nvidia introduced Jetson Thor, a system-on-a-chip and computing platform that enables robots to execute complex tasks while promoting safe and natural interaction with humans and machines. It boasts a modular architecture optimized for performance, power, and size.

Nvidia Collaborates with Leading Companies

Nvidia is collaborating with leading humanoid robot companies, such as Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Fourier Intelligence, Sanctuary AI, Unitree Robotics, and XPENG Robotics, to develop a comprehensive AI platform that will revolutionize humanoid robot capabilities.

Jonathan Hurst, the co-founder and chief robot officer at Agility Robotics, said, “We are at an inflection point in history, with human-centric robots like Digit poised to change labor forever. Modern AI will accelerate development, paving the way for robots like Digit to help people in all aspects of daily life. We’re excited to partner with Nvidia to invest in computing, simulation tools, machine learning environments, and other necessary infrastructure to enable the dream of robots to be a part of daily life.”

Nvidia’s Isaac Platform

In tandem with Project GR00T, Nvidia unveiled significant upgrades to its Isaac robotics platform that empower Project GR00T. The Isaac tools, including Isaac Lab for reinforcement learning and OSMO orchestration service, enable developers to create new foundation models tailored to diverse robotic environments. Additionally, Nvidia introduced Isaac Manipulator and Isaac Perceptor, as well as pre-trained models, libraries, and reference hardware to augment robots’ manipulation and perception capabilities.
