Earlier this year, when Google introduced Bard, it faced significant criticism due to frequent factual errors in its responses. Over time, Bard’s performance improved, and concerns about factual errors reduced. Google is preparing to unveil its latest large language model, Gemini.
According to recent reports, the Gemini AI launch was initially anticipated for this week. However, the release has been postponed because its responses to specific queries were inappropriate. There are indications that Gemini might be launched later in the year, although Google has not officially confirmed this information. Until an official announcement is made, it’s advisable to approach this information skeptically.
According to a report from The Information, sources familiar with the matter reveal that Google has quietly rescheduled the public Gemini AI launch to January.
Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, recently canceled a series of Gemini events in California, New York, and Washington for the upcoming week. This decision was prompted by the company’s recognition of the AI’s dependability issues when dealing with specific non-English queries. The events, which were kept confidential, were initially intended to mark Google’s most crucial product launch of the year.
When Gemini AI was announced at Google’s I/O event in May this year, it was believed to be Google’s response to OpenAI’s widely recognized AI tool, ChatGPT. Subsequently, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said that whenever Gemini is launched, it will surpass the capabilities of ChatGPT.
As per the Wired report, it was disclosed that, according to Hassabis, Gemini is anticipated to surpass ChatGPT in capabilities. Hassabis also mentioned that the DeepMind team uses techniques from the AI program AlphaGo.
AlphaGo, a creation of DeepMind, was the first computer program to defeat a champion human player in the strategy board game Go in 2016.
The publication quoted Hassabis stating, ” At a high level, you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models.”
He explained, “When Gemini is complete, it could play a major role in Google’s response to the competitive threat posed by ChatGPT and other generative AI technology.”
During the announcement of Gemini, Google highlighted in a blog post, “We’re already at work on Gemini — our next model created from the ground up to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations, and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning. Gemini is still in training but already exhibiting multimodal capabilities never before seen in prior models.
Adding further, it claimed, “Once fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety, Gemini will be available at various sizes and capabilities, just like PaLM 2, to ensure it can be deployed across different products, applications, and devices for everyone’s benefit.”
