Bill Gates says AI challenges won’t be solved by pausing development

AI progress must continue despite challenges, says Bill Gates

Bill Gates said stopping the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) would not be effective in dealing with the challenges that lie ahead. Bill Gates was making his first public remarks since an open letter triggered a debate about the future of AI.

Instead, Gates suggested that we must concentrate on finding the best way to use AI advancements since it’s difficult to see how a global pause would work. The Microsoft co-founder emphasized the importance of AI development in addressing various issues.

The open letter has called for an immediate pause in creating “more potent” systems than Microsoft-supported OpenAI’s GPT-4. The generative AI model can have human-like conversations, generate music, and summarize long texts.

Bill Gates says pausing AI development won’t solve challenges

Over 1,000 AI experts, including Elon Musk and Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak, signed the open letter. Steve Wozniak stressed the need to assess the potential risks and benefits to society.

“I don’t think asking one particular group to pause (AI development) solves the challenges,” Gates told Reuters.

“Clearly, there are huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas.”

Gates has been a strong proponent of AI and has compared its potential impact to the Internet or mobile phones.

“I don’t understand who they’re saying could stop, and would every country in the world agree to stop, and why to stop,” he said. “But there are a lot of different opinions in this area.”

In a blog post titled “The Age of AI has Begun,” Gates expressed his belief that AI should be used to alleviate some of the world’s most severe inequalities in a blog post titled “The Age of AI has Begun.” He published the blog post a day before the open letter.

“The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other. Entire industries will reorient around it. Businesses will distinguish themselves by how well they use it,” Gates wrote in the blog.

Bill Gates is dedicated full-time to the philanthropic Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
