Susan Wojcicki to step down as YouTube CEO, Neal Mohan to take charge

Susan Wojcicki is stepping down as the chief executive officer (CEO) of YouTube after spending nine years at the helm of the world’s biggest video-streaming platform. Indian-American Neal Mohan will now be the new CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki said.

She joined the parent company, Alphabet, almost 25 years ago and was one of Google’s first workers. Susan formerly held positions at Bain & Company and Intel.

The 54-year-old Susan stated in her blog that her priorities will be “family, health, and personal projects.” Susan previously served as senior vice president (SVP) for advertising products at Google before becoming CEO of YouTube.

“Today, after nearly 25 years here, I’ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about,” she wrote in her blog ‘A personal update from Susan.’

Neal will be a terrific leader for YouTube, says Susan Wojcicki

Mohan, who joined Google in 2007, has been working to develop YouTube Shorts and Music as the company’s chief product officer. Mohan became YouTube’s Chief Product Officer in 2015. In addition to serving on the boards of Stitch Fix and the genomics and biotechnology company 23andMe, Mohan has previously worked at Microsoft.

“The time is right for me, and I can do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube. When I joined YouTube nine years ago, one of my priorities was bringing in an incredible leadership team. Neal Mohan was one of those leaders, and he’ll be the SVP and new head of YouTube. I’ve spent nearly 15 years of my career working with Neal, first when he came over to Google with the DoubleClick acquisition in 2007 and as his role grew to become SVP of Display and Video Ads,” Susan wrote.

“He has set up a top-notch product and UX team, played pivotal roles in the launch of some of our biggest products, including YouTube TV, YouTube Music, and Premium and Shorts, and has led our Trust and Safety team, ensuring that YouTube lives up to its responsibility as a global platform. He has a wonderful sense for our product, business, creator, user communities, and employees. Neal will be a terrific leader for YouTube,” Susan added.

Meanwhile, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai thanked Susan Wojcicki and said it was “impossible to express” her contribution to the company.
