Meta's Threads app to debut on July 6, posing a direct challenge to Twitter

In a confirmation from Meta, the much-anticipated launch of Threads, the app aimed at challenging Twitter’s dominance, is set to take place on July 6. The app has already been listed on the App Store, generating excitement among users ahead of its official debut.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, the subsidiary of Meta, announced the upcoming release of Threads on his Channel, stating, “Heads up, we’re launching our text app, called Threads, on Thursday. We’re hoping to build an open, civil place for conversation. We have a ton more work to do, but I’m very excited to get it into your hands and hear what you think.”

The move poses a direct challenge to Twitter, which has faced its share of controversies since its acquisition by Elon Musk for a staggering $44 billion in 2022.

Threads will first appear on iPhones, as the app has already been spotted on the App Store, with screenshots providing a glimpse of its interface on iOS. Reports suggest that the app was briefly seen on the Google Play Store this past weekend.

A simple reminder process has been provided to ensure users do not miss the launch. Those interested in downloading Threads can search for the term “threads” on Instagram and then tap on the red-colored ticket in the search bar. Subsequently, a ticket will appear, and by tapping on “Set Reminder” at the bottom of the screen, users will receive a notification when the app becomes available.

Threads app to utilize ActivityPub?

Earlier this year, a report by The Information revealed that Threads would be a standalone app closely integrated with Instagram. It is expected to utilize ActivityPub, an open and decentralized social networking protocol with client/server APIs for content management. This integration will allow Threads users to transfer their accounts and followers to other apps supporting ActivityPub.

Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, emphasized that Threads would provide creators and public figures with a reliable and well-managed platform for content distribution. He stated, “We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution.”

Adding to the excitement, reports suggest that Meta is in talks with high-profile celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama, to join the platform, further fueling anticipation for the app’s launch.

With the upcoming release of Threads, the battle for dominance in the social media landscape will intensify, leaving users eager to explore the new possibilities this app will offer for open and civil conversations.
