Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology warns Twitter to comply with IT Act 2021

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has warned the microblogging site Twitter to comply with the new IT rules or face strict action. The IT ministry has sent notices to the microblogging platform to take down content and non-compliance notices under Section 69A of the IT rule 2021.

According to a report in the Economic Times, the Indian government has sent notices to Twitter in the last eight months but has only received “inadequate” responses from the social media group.

“The action (under the IT Act) has been taken only after several efforts of seeking compliance yielded no results. Any intermediary is free to do business in India and has its content policy. Still, those must be within the boundaries of the domestic legal framework,” an official told Economic Times.

Twitter is now running against time and faces a risk of losing its immunity as an intermediary if it fails to comply with the country’s IT rules by the July 4, 2022 deadline.

“Despite repeated notices and chances being given to them to act, Twitter continues to remain in violation. Therefore, appropriate action is being taken against (it). All intermediaries that operate in India must follow the IT Rules in letter and spirit,” the official added.

Twitter is now running against time and faces a risk of losing its immunity as an intermediary if it fails to comply with the country’s IT rules by the July 4, 2022 deadline.

“There’s no question of you saying, as a platform, that this does not align with my guidelines and rules. That is completely clear. There is no dispute that you have to act on it,” Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT, said.
