Government says India observed 3.6 million cybersecurity incidents in three and a half years

The Indian government has revealed that the country witnessed a massive 36.29 lakh (3.6 million) cybersecurity incidents from 2019 until June 2022.

Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra, while addressing the Lok Sabha during the Parliament Monsoon Session, said the government had taken steps to address the problem.

“As per the information reported to and tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a total of 394499 (2019), 1158208 (2020), 1402809 (2021), and 674021 (until June 2022) cybersecurity incidents were observed three and a half years, respectively,” Ajay Kumar Mishra said in Lok Sabha while replying to a written question.

While the number of cybersecurity incidents has only grown each year, the government says it has put in place measures to enhance its cybersecurity posture and prevent cyber attacks.

“The government is operating an automated cyber threat exchange platform for proactively collecting, analyzing, and sharing tailored alerts with organizations across sectors for proactive threat mitigation actions by them,” he said.

In April, the Indian government issued guidelines for tech companies to report cybersecurity threats within six hours and store subscriber details for at least five years after service cancellation.

Top tech companies such as Meta and Google have criticized the cybersecurity rules and demanded the six-hour window be extended to 72 hours.
