Google has extended the reach of its innovative generative AI search results to 120 additional countries and territories, marking its largest international expansion to date. The “search generative experience” (SGE) by Google shows users an AI-generated summary of search results, aiming to provide concise information without needing to navigate through multiple links. With SGE, the traditional blue links are now below the AI-generated results.
Google initially released the product in the United States, accessible to users who sign up for the beta version in Google’s Search Labs, with subsequent releases in Japan and India.
According to Google, feedback from these countries has been overwhelmingly positive, with users finding generative AI especially valuable for addressing complex queries beyond their typical search scope.
Among the 120 newly added countries with SGE access are Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. Additionally, SGE now supports four additional languages besides English: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian. Despite this language inclusion, support for only five languages might limit the product’s accessibility across all 120 countries.
This addition represents Google’s commitment to AI-generated summaries as the future of search. In May, the company revealed plans to integrate SGE permanently into all search result pages, moving beyond its beta phase. However, the specific timeline for this transition still needs to be confirmed.
Google Translate also received an AI-infused upgrade, said Google. The enhancement addresses ambiguous words with multiple meanings, offering users clarity through a drop-down menu. Although this feature is unavailable, Google anticipates its imminent release in the United States for English-to-Spanish translations, with plans for further expansion.
Furthermore, Google has fortified SGE’s academic utility by introducing an interactive method for exploring definitions related to educational subjects, such as science, economics, or history, through AI-powered overviews. Notably, SGE has evolved to encourage users to ask follow-up questions, transforming the experience from a static AI-generated paragraph to a more dynamic, fluid, ChatGPT-style conversation.
While the fate of Google Bard, the company’s standalone chatbot, remains uncertain, the competitive landscape is evolving, with Microsoft integrating Bing Chat into its primary search engine and OpenAI enhancing its ChatGPT model. Google, undoubtedly, faces growing pressure to stay ahead in the rapidly advancing field of AI.
