United Nations urges Elon Musk to ensure Human Rights are central to management of Twitter

In response to news that Twitter’s entire human rights staff was being laid off, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, wrote an open letter to the company’s new CEO, Elon Musk, urging him to “guarantee that human rights are central to the management of Twitter.”

In his letter, Türk encouraged Twitter to defend the freedoms of speech and privacy to the fullest extent allowed by the law and to openly report on any requests from the government that would violate such liberties.

“In short, I urge you to ensure human rights are central to the management of Twitter under your leadership,” Türk said in a letter.

Global revolution

“Twitter is part of a global revolution that has transformed communication. But I write with concern and apprehension about our digital public square and Twitter’s role. Like all companies, Twitter needs to understand the harms associated with its platform and take steps to address them. Respect for our shared human rights should set the guardrails for the platform’s use and evolution,” Türk added.

He added that hatred that incites prejudice, intolerance, or violence has no place on Twitter.

“Research is better to understand social media’s impact on our societies. Maintain access to Twitter’s data through its open application programming interfaces (APIs),” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

On Friday, Elon Musk began letting go of Twitter workers. According to an unsigned internal document, Twitter employees received an email informing them that layoffs would soon start. It’s anticipated that Musk will lay off about half of Twitter’s 7,500 employees. Soon after taking charge of Twitter in late October, Elon Musk sacked CEO Parag Agrawal and legal head Vijaya Gadde.
