Apple stops accepting credit and debit card payments in India

Apple has stopped accepting Credit and Debit Card payments for subscriptions and app payments on the App Store. The move comes in the wake of the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules for auto-debit charges announced last year.

However, the users can make purchases and subscribe to services by making payments via net banking, UPI, or Apple ID Balance.

“Regulatory requirements in India apply to the processing of recurring transactions. If you hold an Indian debit or credit card and have a subscription, these changes impact your transactions. Banks and card issuers might decline some transactions. To continue enjoying your subscriptions, you can pay with your Apple ID balance. You can add to your Apple ID balance using App Store Codes, Net Banking, and UPI,” the support page read as reported by India Today.

NEW RBI GUIDELINES

In the recurring payment model, users give standing instructions to merchants to debit funds from their accounts automatically at the date of service or subscription renewal. RBI mandated the new auto-debit payment in October last year. The rule requires banks to send a pre-debit notification 24 hours before processing the automatic payment to the merchant. All recurring payments for and above Rs 5,000 can only be made with OTP before the debit.

The new guidelines did not apply to UPI and NACH-based recurring payments.
