Apple marks the end of an era by discontinuing iPod line

Apple has officially discontinued the iPod line, marking the end of an era. However, Apple has said that the latest 7th generation iPod Touch, launched in 2019, will be available for purchase until stocks last. The first model of the Apple iPod was launched in 2001.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impact more than just the music industry. It has also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said.

iPod did revolutionize listening to music. The music streaming device became an instant hit after it was introduced to the market by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Its unique scroll wheel and compact size made the iPod a hit product.

“Today, the spirit of the iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to the HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music,” Joswiak added.

With the iPhone series of mobile devices gaining immense popularity, Apple stopped paying enough attention to the iPod. An iPhone can stream music and videos, among several other things, and it makes little to no sense carrying an extra device solely for listening to music.
