Elon Musk, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO, is giving “serious thought” to build a new social media platform in competition with Twitter. Musk, who has been critical of Twitter lately, tweeted a poll on the microblogging website asking users if they believed “Twitter adheres to the principle of free speech.”
“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” Musk tweeted.
In another tweet, Musk asked the participants to vote judiciously, “the consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
The poll received a great response, with over 20 lakh people participating in the voting. An overwhelming 70.4% voted in favour of “No.”
A day after the poll, while responding to a question, Musk said, “Am giving serious thought to this.”
Twitter user Pranay Pathole had asked, “Would you consider building a new social media platform, @elonmusk? One that would consist an open source algorithm, one where free speech and adhering to free speech is given top priority, one where propaganda is very minimal. I think that kind of a platform is needed.”
There have been multiple platforms like Truth Social, Gettr and Parler, and video site Rumble, but none of them have come close to Twitter. It would be interesting to see how and when Musk moves ahead with launching his own social media platform.
