Cloud computing, 5G, Metaverse among top five areas of technology in 2023 and beyond
According to IEEE, cloud computing, 5G, metaverse, electric vehicles (EVs), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) will be the five most important areas of technology in 2023 and beyond. IEEE conducted a new survey of global technology leaders from the U.S., U.K., China, India, and Brazil. The study included 350 chief technology officers, chief information officers, and IT directors, covering essential technologies in 2023 and future technology trends.
The findings of “The Impact of Technology in 2023 and Beyond: an IEEE Global Study” state cloud computing (40%), 5G (38%), metaverse (37%), electric vehicles (EVs) (35%), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) (33%) will be the top five most important areas of technology.
Technologies that promote sustainability are becoming more significant. Most respondents (94%) concur that they have given sustainability targets for 2023 and beyond as top priorities. Any technologies their company adopts must be energy-efficient and contribute to reducing their carbon footprint.
AI, metaverse growing in importance
The following ways metaverse-related technologies are anticipated to be used: 91% of respondents concur that their organization is actively implementing metaverse technology tactics in 2023 to bring employees together for corporate training across offices, conferences, and hybrid meetings. Additionally, 26%-75% of interactions with coworkers, clients, and management at their organization will be performed digitally in 2023, according to over three-quarters (76%) of global technologists.
AI is now widely used. Therefore, it is not unexpected that 98% of poll participants concur that autonomous, collaborative software and mobile robots driven by AI would automate processes and jobs, including data analysis, in 2023 and beyond, allowing humans to be more productive and efficient. Additionally, when asked what proportion of employment will be added by AI-driven software throughout the entire global economy in 2023, 24% of tech experts indicated 1-25%, 40% said 26-50%, and 27% stated 51-75%.
According to the survey, 98% of respondents believe that in 2023, digital twin technology and virtual simulations will be used to more effectively design, develop, and safely test product prototypes and manufacturing processes. This is related to the IIoT, which optimizes smart industrial machines, sensors, processors, and the real-time data they generate.
